Support the 18th National Indigenous Peoples Day Auction

Donate items for online auction by June 16

Remember the record we set in the pandemic?! Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. Let’s do this… again!

The CBABC Aboriginal Lawyers Forum continues to raise money towards initiatives such as the Warrior Project, which supports Indigenous articling students, our future legal warriors. Find out below how the Warrior Project attracted a $10,000 donation last year from Globalaw. This year’s 18th National Indigenous Peoples Day Online Auction takes place on June 20-28, 2025.

Auction items are now being collected

Our auction is known for its unique collection of items up for bid. We will auction off pretty much anything that will attract a bid, so think outside the box. One year, we auctioned off a wall heater to a happy winner in Nisga’a Territory. See last year’s auction for donation ideas here: 2024 NIPD Auction: All Items. Contact Isabel.jackson@justice.gc.ca if you would like to donate or if you need more information.

Are you an artisan or crafter? The auction quickly became a place for creatives to showcase their talent. Many auction items are original works, Indigenous and non-Indigenous—books, photography, paintings, limited edition prints, jewellery, etc. These original works contribute to both the success and distinctiveness of our auction. Consider donating your original work to this year's effort. It will be a great opportunity to profile your talent while supporting a worthy cause.

Not an artisan or crafter? Consider donating any item that will attract a bid, including select pre-owned items that remain suitable for recycling, upcycling or re-gifting. Again, think outside the box when considering what you can donate to be auctioned off.

Tickets, passes, gift cards/certificates, etc. are other popular items. Consider soliciting a donation from your favourite restaurant, spa or other business that you patronize. Promotional opportunities are provided on the auction website.

Mentor Lunches. Experienced lawyers will take their winning bidder out for lunch for a time of sustenance in the form of food for the body as well as the mind and hopefully for the soul too! This is a unique opportunity for both mentors and protégés. Consider auctioning yourself off as a mentor or encouraging someone else to do so.

Canada Strong

The auction is a great opportunity to profile and support local Canadian businesses and services. These are win-win donations.

In addition to donating items for auction, you can also help by soliciting donations, sharing the eventual auction link, bidding on auction items and winning of course!

For the last couple of years, we have aimed to amass 300 auction items, and we have come so-o close. Maybe this is the year.

Globalaw Donates $10,000

As a Section of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum is still the first and only section of its kind in Canada. The ALF's mandate aims to increase the stature and influence of Indigenous people in the legal profession—a cultural imperative.

The ALF is proud of their strong support of Indigenous law and articling students—our future legal warriors. Owing to the success of this annual auction, we increased our three annual Student Appreciation Awards from $500 to $1,000 to Indigenous law students from the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and Thompson Rivers University. The success of the auction during the pandemic and since has been record-setting, allowing the ALF to launch The Warrior Project in 2022. In addition, the ALF hosts events such as its annual Holiday Banquet as well as an annual retreat, fulfilling the goal of the ALF to bring Indigenous lawyers together for support, mentorship and networking.

Last year on June 21, 2024—National Indigenous Peoples Day—the Globalaw Foundation announced their support of the Warrior Project through a $10,000 donation. The Globalaw Foundation focuses on helping young people access legal education and training and supporting access to justice for those who would otherwise be denied it for financial or other reasons.

Can’t wait for the auction?!

You can make direct donations to support the Warrior Project here. Be sure to select the “CBABC Aboriginal Lawyers Forum Scholarship” from the drop-down menu. Donations of $25 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
